From uninhabitable homes to new beginnings

Following the 2023 NZ storms, uninhabitable homes were purchased from residents in high-risk areas.

Now, instead of valuable materials going to waste, Auckland Council is working with deconstruction professionals, including Māori and Pasifika-owned businesses, to recover, reuse and repurpose them.

By giving these materials a second life, Auckland Council is supporting a more circular approach to housing, reducing waste and creating opportunities through local partnerships.

Some awesome stats:

  • 617 homes affected.
  • 80% of material removed - diverted from landfill through resource recovery schedules.
  • $13 million spend with diverse Amotai suppliers, (34% of total programme spent to date!)
